Resurgent Medvedev Wins First Championship in Nearly 30 Months
19 of Daniil Medvedev's 21 titles have been earned on hard courts
A comeback Daniil Medvedev claimed his maiden title for over two years with victory over Corentin Moutet in the competition championship match.
The Russian, a former top-ranked player, has endured a challenging period, winning just one match at the big events and suffering a meltdown at the New York tournament.
Medvedev's inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his serving in especial - resulted in him dropping out of the world's top 10 and ultimately parting ways with long-term mentor Cervara.
Presently collaborating with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has steadily progressed in the recent weeks - peaking in a hard-fought competitive win over opponent Moutet.
This marks the player's maiden trophy after the 2023 Rome Masters and initial on a hardcourt since that period of 2023.
The win also means Medvedev has secured twenty-one titles at 21 different tournaments.
"For the first time I have attended a tournament with my both daughters at once, so to get a championship is especially meaningful," stated ranked player Medvedev.
"This title is in honour of my second daughter Victoria, because the maiden victory I won when my child Alisa was born was for her."
The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his past six finals, comprising in that event in the past months.
The player's retrieving strategy and recurring outbursts on court had caused commentators to question if his skill to perform at the elite level was finished.
However the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in the last few weeks, making an effort to approach the net and compete positively, backed up by an improved serve.
He recovered from a disadvantage in the opening set against the tricky Frenchman, taking four of the concluding five exchanges to take the lead.
The pair traded break points in the following set before the Frenchman, attempting for his first ATP Tour title, took control to create a final set.
The opponent defended four early chances in a competitive deciding set before the Russian secured a break to that score to close out the victory.
Appropriately, Medvedev secured the title with a point at the net area, with Moutet incapable to control a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
