The Fast-Food Giant Pulls AI-Created Holiday Commercial After Backlash.

The global fast-food chain has taken down a Christmas commercial produced with AI following receiving significant criticism on social media.

The brief film was created with the help of AI video tools and was initially released publicly for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.

Audience Response and Decision to Pull

Soon after it aired, commenters criticized the use of AI in the commercial. Many described it as "disturbing" and "jarringly assembled".

"This incident represents an important learning as we explore the appropriate utilization of generative technology," said a statement from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was developed for McDonald's by Netherlands-based company TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It portrayed a series of situations that often go badly over the festive season, using the theme "not the most wonderful time of the year".

A Growing Phenomenon of AI Commercials

Adverts that include generative AI have become a rising phenomenon among major companies, notably for the holiday campaign season.

  • Another beverage giant has recently launched consecutive AI-generated Christmas commercials.
  • Technical Challenges: Since segments produced using current AI video tools are prone to become unstable the longer they run, most AI video outputs tend to be about short in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The ad also raised worries about job displacement in the production sector, with some critics pointing out it could reduce opportunities for camera crews.

Defense from the Production Company

After the commercial being pulled, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, defended the advert.

Bridge claimed, the creation took "seven weeks" and involved producing "countless iterations" which were then shaped in post-production "in the same way we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't just an experiment," she said. "It was a proper commercial."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's commercial was mostly panned, the reception for some AI-assisted holiday ads has been varied.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created holiday spot from Coca-Cola reportedly garnered a 61% "positive sentiment rating" from the public.

However, other businesses have also faced criticism for employing the technique in advertising. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that critics described as "low-effort" and "uncanny".

The incident illustrates the ongoing debate within the advertising and production sectors about the trade-off between AI efficiency and creative integrity.
