The Legendary Anime Concludes a Quarter-Century Tradition in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in January, once the current storyline wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime had a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to deliver fans with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with some instead covering one and a half chapters or more to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many side stories, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the following. Today, series creation is structured in seasons, with a couple at most releasing each annually, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
